On 3 February we held our first event of the year. Around 40 people attended to discuss plans for the year ahead, it was clear all agreed that whilst Green Capital year has finished, it doesn’t stop here! Discussions included topics such as community outreach, ongoing energy projects in the city, working with volunteers and the Bristol Community Energy Fund.

Bristol Energy Cooperative’s £5 million planned community energy projects come closer to reality this week solar after raising over £1,000,000 in its crowdfunding campaign and bond offer so far, and is using these funds to install solar panels on Easton Community Centre and Brentry and Henbury Children’s Centres.
Bristol has a new fund to support community energy projects.
The grant programme supports activities with one of the following aims:
· To support local people to reduce their energy use (e.g. their use of electricity or gas)
· To support local people in moving toward cleaner renewable sources of energy
· To support local people to take measures that ensure they can afford to meet their energy needs

Last week I passed my PhD defence, the most dreaded of events for any PhD student. Thankfully mine wasn’t a grueling 4-hour duel between examiner and examinee but an interesting discursive conversation around the research topic, approach and outcomes. Their conclusion, that I should add a few sign-posting paragraphs and correct the typos in order to be accepted, was a great relief. Still, its been a while since I gave many of you an update, so I’d like to take this moment to do so and also to express my gratitude to those that have made it possible.
Take the energy quiz by 20 December for a chance to win either a Christmas hamper of local goodies from Fresh Range or a Bristol Energy Co-operative share (investing in local solar projects) – you choose! The value of the prizes is £50. The winner will be the person with the highest score.
