Who we elect to Europe has the potential to make a big difference. Most of our environmental protection legislation comes from Europe and applies across member states. The economy is a big stumbling block for this, and needs to be modernised.
The candidates on the panel are Graham Watson MEP (Lib Dem 1), Molly Scott-Cato (Green 1, economist), Clare Moody (Labour 1) and Melissa Maynard (Conservative 6). The chair is James Vaccaro, International Head of Corporate Development at Triodos Bank, the green European bank with UK headquarters in Bristol.
Due to the proportional election system used there will be 6 MEPs chosen form the South-West probably from Conservative, UKIP, Lib-Dem, Green Party and Labour lists (in decreasing order of votes last time) with all these having a good chance of getting candidates. Last time we had 3 Con, 2 UKIP, 1 Lib Dem and the Green party very narrowly missed getting a seat with Labour not so far behind.
Encouraging family, friends and contacts to vote could make a crucial difference to the outcome, so please encourage people to engage and elect representatives who will actively promote a fair sustainable future through the European Parliament.
Please spread the word about this event throughout the South West region, and see where webcast parties could be held to share food, discuss views and send your questions live.
